Obituary for George A. Elkington

George A. Elkington 89, of New Hudson, Michigan, beloved father and grandfather, died at home on April 30, 2013.

He and his wife June (died October 2009) were married for nearly 60 years and raised four children together, all of whom survive him: William (Patricia), Thomas (Patricia), Nancy, James. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Kristen Elkington-Shafto (Dan), Brian (Alaine Arnott), Nathaniel (Janelle) and Katharine Lucic (Luca). He leaves behind his loving sister Doris Hamaker as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

George was born and raised in Highland Park, Michigan and was a veteran of World War II, serving in Northern Europe. He and his wife June enjoyed traveling to new places where they visited friends and family or simply explored a new part of the country. They also traveled adventurously to South America, Mexico and England. They happily settled into retirement in a cottage on Torch Lake in Northern Michigan and joined St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids where George leaves behind many friends. George always loved to garden and, with June, achieved Master Gardener status through a University of Michigan Extension program. He leaves behind many friends at Abbey Park in New Hudson, in Elk Rapids and along Torch Lake and in Central Lake. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service is being arranged for the summer in Northern Michigan. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Memorial Fund, 403 Traverse Street, Elk Rapids, MI 49629 or to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, call 1-866-232-8484 to make a donation.
