Obituary for George Allard

George Nestor Allard, a life-long resident of Milford and Commerce, died November 7, 2008 surrounded by his loving family. He was 77 years old. George was born April 25, 1931 in Wayne County and raised along with his brother James by his parents George and Inez in Milford, Michigan. During his childhood, George met his best friend, Arthur Hart, who went on to become his brother-in-law. A member of Milford High School's Class of 1949, George enlisted in the Navy soon after graduation and served nearly 4 years during the Korean War as an Air Traffic Controller and Navigator in the Pacific Theatre. During his time as a navigator, he assisted in the transportation of injured soldiers out of Korea. This experience fueled a love of airplanes that lasted his entire life.

George found the love of his life in Dorothy Hinske and married her on April 12, 1958 at The Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak. Eventually "landing" in Commerce Township, they were soon blessed with three children, Kevin, Erin and Thomas. A member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in White Lake since he was four years old, George raised and willed to his family his rich faith, abiding hope and deep love of church and family. George was a proud member of the United Auto Workers Union, Local 594, and served as a committee man for much of his tenure. Many of his long time friendships were made throughout his 39 years of service at General Motors as a metal model maker.

An ever-present and doting grandfather, George treasured his three grandchildren, who adoringly called him "Pop" while friends of the grandkids knew him as "Cool Dude." His sense of pride and dedication to his community compelled him to become a Commerce Township Planning Commission board member and a member on the Zoning Board of Appeals, positions he held for over 20 years. George was a die-hard fan of the Detroit Pistons and before his health was failing he didn't miss too many games. In his retirement, and with Art Hart still by his side, he spent autumns providing fun and rides to visitors at Long's Apple Orchard as tractor/hayride drivers.

Mr. Allard was pre-deceased by his father, George C., his mother, Inez, and his brother, James. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Dorothy; children, Kevin (Cathy) Allard, Erin (Daniel) Gertiser, Tom (Anne) Allard; grandchildren, Kalynne, Rebecca, Brandon and many loving extended family members and dear friends who together mourn the loss of a great man and celebrate his legacy of generosity, faith and great love.
