Obituary for George Frederick Grant

George Frederick Grant, a long time resident of Milford, died on January 25, 2016 at the age of 71.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on September 27, 1944, the son of Robert and Agnes (nee Donaldson) Grant, George grew up in Detroit where he attended McKenzie High School, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a medic. When he returned from service, he went to work for Detroit Diesel where he served as a sanitational engineer for over thirty-two years. He retired in 2000.

George was a proud member of Milford American Legion Post 216, an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus #7444 with whom he was a Past Grand Knight. He helped with the church fair each year and was instrumental in beginning the Knights of Columbus yearly Christmas tree sales fundraiser.

George was a member of the Milford CB Club, handle ‘Seahorse’, and enjoyed opportunities to fish, hunt, and spend time at the family cottage up north. He loved a good game of cards and games with his grandkids. He was always patient, ever ready with good calm advice, and always, always saw the good in people. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to Gerry, his beloved wife of over forty-five years, he is survived by his sons, Joe and Terry Grant; his daughter, Amanda (Mark) Zabkiewicz; grandchildren, Marty, Kimberly, Cody, AnnaMarie, Kylee-Ann, RaynaRose, Jake, Brianna, Cole, Amber, Laynie, Robert, Sapphire, Kallie, Zanderlee; great granddaughter, Serenity, and another on the way; his adopted grandchild, Jayden; Godson, Jimmy; Goddaughter, Carrie Ann; his siblings, Don (Shirley) Grant, Larry (the late Carol) Grant, Jim (Judy) Grant, Mary Lou (Lauren) Kruger (the late John Trolley), Ray (Jeanine) Grant, Edward (Cindy) Grant; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Sandy (Dan) Pilarski, Mike (Maryjo) Cohn, Kaye (the late Joe) Dinsmore, Mark (Carol) Cohn, Rob (Connie) Cohn; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, many adopted children and grandchildren, many dear friends and his cats, Eeyore and Mischief. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Agnes; a grandchild, Baby Z; a brother, Richard (Valerie) Grant; sister, Marion Grant and brother-in-law, Edward Cohn.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Monday, February 1, from 3-8PM with K of C Rosary at 7PM.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce Rd., Milford, on Tuesday, February 2, at 10AM. Military Honors will follow Mass, as will a luncheon at the church. Memorials may be made in his name to the Am. Heart Assoc., Am. Cancer Soc. or to the MI Humane Society.
