Obituary for George Hill Jr.

George Hill Jr., 89, of Commerce Township MI, passed away on May 1, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Agnes, his sister, Mae Emery and his beloved wife of 55 years, Joan. He is survived by his children, Jonathan (Jennifer) Hill, David (Susan) Hill, and Rebecca (John) Kolb; grandchildren Katelyn (Nate) Burkey, Christine (Chris) Ballweg, Ian (Rachel) Hill, Maxwell Hill, and Margaret (Chris) Bauer; and great-grandchildren William, James, and Ella Burkey and Logan, Mack and Charlotte Hill.

George’s parents and sister immigrated to Chicago, Illinois from Glasgow, Scotland in 1925. George was born in 1932 and grew up with strong Scottish roots. He often spoke about peeling the totties every day after school before his mother got home from work. George was a Chicago kid and a life-long Bears and Cubs fan. Throughout his life George loved sports. He grew up playing baseball, basketball and soccer and played baseball in college. George loved the University of Cincinnati sports programs and was a booster for many years. George loved watching and playing golf and was a member of Western Hills Country Club.

He attended Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana, from 1952 to 1955 where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. While attending Hanover, George met the love of his life, Joan Templin, a Cincy girl. After graduation, George moved to Cincinnati and was hired by Cincinnati Bell in 1955. He and Joan married in June 1955 and raised three children in Cincinnati. George began his Bell career as a Staff Assistant and rose through the ranks to become Director of Information Systems. In 1983, George and Joan moved to Barrington, IL, where George became Vice President of Accounting and Information Systems at Ameritech. George retired from Ameritech in 1988 and he and Joan returned to Cincinnati to be closer to Joan’s parents.

George felt very strongly about contributing to his community. George and Joan were long standing members of Westwood United Methodist Church. For many years George was active in the Western Hills Optimists philanthropic organization as well as the Scottish Rite. George was very involved with local school events and served as president of the Oak Hills School Board for several years. George coached his sons’ little league teams for baseball, basketball and football. He also attended his grandchildren’s sporting events from grade school through high school and loved providing constructive feedback to anyone that would listen.

After Joan’s death, George began spending more time in Michigan where Jonathan and Rebecca reside. George fell in love with lake life and H&J’s frog legs and moved to Michigan permanently in 2018.

George will be remembered as a warm, generous, man, a devoted husband, and hands-on father and grandfather. George’s smile would light up a room … he will be missed.
