Obituary for George J. Varilone

George Joseph Varilone, a resident of Milford, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, April 21, 2013 at the age of 88.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on May 20, 1924, George was the son of Italian immigrants, Michael and Theresa, and brother to 3 sisters and 5 brothers. He was the beloved husband to Henrietta for nearly 65 years; and a devoted father to Brenda, George Jr., Michael, and Steven.
George had fond memories of growing up on 12th Street in Detroit, and the close connection shared with his siblings, in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. The frequent get-togethers continued into his married life and were a highlight to him and his children. He joined the U.S. Army when he was only 19 years old and fought in the artillery as a gunner during WWII. He received many Military citations for his service, and his honorable discharge was one he was proud of.
George worked long hard hours in the construction industry all of his life, and attained success as an operator of large machines and a small excavation business of his own. He always tried to treat others with dignity, and wanted the same respect in return. In 1985, he retired at the age of 62 and enjoyed 28 bountiful years of retirement. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends, gardening, making wine and cooking for everyone. George was also an avid sports fan. He loved the Detroit Lions, Tigers, and the PGA. He began playing the game of golf at 70 with St. Marys Parish and fell in love with the sport. In addition to golf, he loved playing Euchre, Pinnacle and Bridge with his friends from St.Marys, neighbors, and family. Above all activities, George most enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. It never mattered when or where, he would stop and play with one of the kids, no matter how old they were.

Over the years, George has made several memorable trips to Europe. During one trip to Italy, he was able to visit his mothers two remaining sisters in Villa la Tina, just outside of Rome. He still spoke of the town that stood still from the time his mother grew up there. He also enjoyed numerous vacations in the city that never sleeps, Las Vegas, and was proud to have taken his family to the Caribbean for the first of many return trips.
George Varilone was a strong man physically, and especially steadfast religiously and socially. His family always came first, but his friends were a close second and his reputation for being both honest and loyal resonated in his personal and business life. He always had a smile for friends or strangers, and was willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need. His commitment to community service continued right up to the end of his life.

Our hero went home to the Lord on April 21, 2013 at 88 years old.

George was preceded in death by his son, Michael and granddaughter, Kalli. He is survived by Henrietta, his beloved wife of 65 years, and their children, Brenda (Michael) Ziembrowski, George (Pamela Silvi) Jr., Steve (LeighAnn); grandchildren, Jessica (Matthew) Breiding, Brandon (Erin) and Hayley Varilone, Chad, Michael, Evan, Nathan and Scott Varilone; great grandchildren, Henry, Owen and Katherine Breiding and Noel Varilone. George is also survived by his brother, Dominic, many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.
