Obituary for George Joel Catto

George Joel Catto of Wixom, died at his home on Monday, March 19, 2018 in the care of his wife and two sons. He was 79 years old. Born on October 15, 1938 in Detroit, he was the only son along with his two sisters Sallie and Barbara. He grew up in Highland Park and later moved to Troy right across the street from Sylvan Glen Golf Course where his father was the greens superintendent and head pro. George was very close to his father and was with him whenever possible. He spent his childhood on the golf course working along side his daddy from a very young age. Bills dream was to buy a golf course for the family to run. He fulfilled that dream in 1961 when he purchased Hickory Hill Golf Course in Wixom. George was drafted in 1963 but later received honorable discharge to return home to run the business when Bill became ill. His father passed away in 1965. George spent the rest of his life running the family business that his Dad always dreamed of. Along with his mother, many family members and close friends worked for him at the course. Hildur would go on to work at the pro shop until she was 95. He would even go on to meet his wife, Karen Brown, at the course. They were married in 1987 and had two sons, Joel and Shawn. They would spend their lives together at Hickory Hill, building a house right off of the 3rd hole. George got to live out his fathers dream of running the business with his family. Watching his two sons grow up, become avid golfers, and later would take over running the golf course themselves. George loved golf, he loved running the business, and even more he loved his family. He got to enjoy many great memories at Hickory Hill and met so many wonderful people that became part of his life.

George is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Karen. Sons Joel and Shawn. Sister Sallie (the late Jim) Brodie. Aunt Gail Kemler and Uncle Oscar Johnson. George was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Barbara (Henry) Wright.
