Obituary for George John Finzel

George John Finzel, a longtime resident of Commerce Township, native of Detroit, former resident of Novi, and retiree of Ford Motor Company’s Rouge Steel plant, died at home in the care of his loving family on June 13, 2019 at the age of 84.

Born on August 3, 1934 the youngest son of George and Johannah Finzel, George grew up in Detroit where he was baptized and confirmed at St. Thomas and Peter Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of Detroit Lutheran High School and it was during his sophomore year that he met the love of his life Ruth Bellhorn. Upon high school graduation he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and after initial training George and Ruth married on April 6, 1956.  After 4 years of service in the Coast Guard, George began his career with Ford Motor Company.  He enjoyed his work as a Systems Analyst with Ford for over thirty-three years before retiring in 1990.

George and Ruth enjoyed their home on Penton Rise that George built, before moving to Lake Sherwood in 1995. They enjoyed winters in Bonita Springs, Florida, where he basked in the sun for many years. He liked being outside, as long as he was warm, and was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed spending time snowmobiling with his family. George loved to work with his hands; assembling golf clubs, fixing his grandkids toys, and remodeling around the home.

A man of great faith, he loved the Lord and was a longtime devoted member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

George’s greatest hobby and treasure was his family. He was a devoted husband to Ruth for over sixty-three years and was a role model and loving father to his four children. An adoring grandfather, his greatest pleasure was making his grandchildren laugh. He also was a great cook but specialized in breakfast, his family-famous apple pie, and grape jelly. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, whether it was rain or shine George was there to cheer them on. He played Sudoku and solitaire and just loved to be surrounded by his family, which was his only wish through his illness.

He will be forever missed by many, most of all by his beloved wife, “his Ruthie”; his daughters, Melissa (Bill) Turner, Renee Zaguroli, and Kristen (Mike) Ohlrich; dear grandchildren, Lauren Turner, Anthony Zaguroli, Nicole Zaguroli (fiancé Alex Hirsch), Natalie Zaguroli, Hana and Nathaniel Ohlrich; sisters-in-law, Janet Wagnon and Alberta Bellhorn, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who join his family in both mourning his passing and giving thanks to God for his life among them.  He was preceded in death by his son, Joel Finzel, in 1987.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Sunday, June 16, from 1-8PM. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 2040 S. Commerce Rd., Walled Lake, on Monday, June 17, at 11AM, with gathering beginning at 10AM. A luncheon will follow at the church. Burial at Glen Eden Cemetery, Livonia, 2PM. Memorials may be made in his name to the Ephphatha Lutheran Mission Society for the Deaf.
