Obituary for Georgiana Mary Poniatowski

Georgiana M. Poniatowski, a resident of Commerce Township, died on July 16, 2012 after a battle with melanoma. She was 65 years old. Born on September 21, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of George and Rita (Schutza) Gardynik, she grew up in Detroit's Polish neighborhood and St. Casimir Parish. She came to know Joseph A. Poniatowski, her brother's best friend, and after a first date that included a holding of hands that sent a zap of electricity up her arm, they quickly fell in love. They would marry on November 19, 1966 in St. Casimir Catholic Church. They made their home in Detroit, and later moved to Redford, Farmington and White Lake Township before moving to her dream home in Commerce Township. She has been a member of Prince of Peace Parish in West Bloomfield since 2002.

Georgiana was driven to obtain a higher education, and attended night school for over twelve years at Oakland University to earn her Bachelor Degree in Business. She went on to work in Blue Cross/Blue Shield's Claims Department for over twenty years, before retiring a couple of years ago when her husband became ill.

Georgiana was a leader in her family. She took care of her sisters and mother when they needed help, was the family history keeper and genealogist, and was looking forward to a trip to Poland this Fall. She also appreciated an organized household, loved to properly decorate her home, and was a fabulous baker, a skill she credited to her great aunt. She was a talented craftswoman and loved opportunities to paint, create pencil drawings, work with ceramics and sew. Each of her children have found an aspect of her talents in themselves, and will always treasure her pencil drawings, the wedding veils she made for her daughters and the First Communion dresses she sewed for her granddaughters.

Georgiana raised and instilled in her children a sense of how to do the right thing, and to do things for themselves. She was ever the example in the resourceful ways she tackled a needed repair, or a problem, and she always knew what to do. She exhibited ethics and an integrity that was respected among her frirends and family and she was always someone you could go to for good advice. She will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A. Poniatowski, in 2011.

She is survived by her daughters, Katie (Glenn) Weatherly, Judy (Mark) Everest, Kristen (Mark) Newman, Amy (Douglass) Burgdorf, Sarah (Todd) Toccalino; her son, Joseph M. Poniatowski; fifteen grandchildren; sisters, Gloria (Cass) Ziola and Joan (Mark) Turon and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by brothers, George and Peter Gardynik, and her mother, Rita Gardynik this year.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 4300 Walnut Lake Road, West Bloomfield, on Saturday, July 21, at 11AM. Burial Milford Memorial Cemetery, Milford. Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, Thursday 4-9PM and Friday 1-9PM, with a Rosary on Friday at 7PM. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
