Obituary for Gerald M. Wilson

Gerald Michael Wilson, a longtime resident of Milford, passed away at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the age of 59.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on March 13, 1952, one of four sons to Wesley and Ruth Wilson, Jerry grew up in Milford and graduated from MHS in 1970. While in high school, Jerry loved playing hockey at Detroit Skating Club and Iceland in Troy. His love of the sport motivated him to begin the schools first Hockey Club. As President of the club, Jerry was proud to see its eventual acceptance as an official school sports team competing in a district league. Following graduation, he continued playing Junior Varsity Hockey and at Michigan State University. Jerry earned his degree in Criminal Justice which later found him work as inmate guard with Ingham County Sheriff Department. A compassionate man owning a bigger heart than most, Jerrys personality wasnt entirely well suited for the mode of institutional work. He was quite simply too likable and too good at establishing personable connections socially. His change in career paths brought him to General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford where he became Head of Communications and Public Relations-a career that enriched his life with many friendships and fond memories. Always involved, interested and invested in the lives of the people around him, Jerry stayed active within the community in numerous capacities. He was a supporter of Huron Valleys HOT Robotics Team, an active member of Huron Valley Chamber of Commerce, a longtime contributor with the Milford Memories Festival Committee and the fellow neighbor that could be called on anytime for a hand... if he hadnt already volunteered his own. In his time away from work, he enjoyed reading, woodworking and golfing and was especially happy on the open road riding his 83 Honda Goldwing. Perhaps his greatest joy was time spent with his daughter, Michelle, and granddaughter, Magnolia.

In addition to his loving daughter, Michelle Wilson, Jerry is survived by his granddaughter, Magnolia; parents, Wesley and Ruth Wilson; brothers, Jim (Patty) Wilson, Donald Wilson; nieces, Jennifer (Daniel) Williams, Isabella Williams; nephews, Mathew (Nichole) Wilson, Owen Williams and many aunts, uncles, cousins as well as his feline friend, Pookie.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert (d. 2007).

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Marys Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce Rd., Milford on Monday, June 27 at 10 AM with Fr. Ron Anderson officiating. Burial St. Marys Cemetery, Milford. Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Sunday, 2-9 PM. Rosary Sunday 7 PM.
