Gordon Eugene "Gordie" Haggerty, a longtime resident of Milford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 1st, 2015 at the age of 85, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 2nd, 1930, the oldest child to Gordon and Francis (Finnerty) Haggerty. Gordie was a graduate of St. Anthony's High School in Detroit and it was at St. Anthony's that he met Barbara Genord. He married his high school sweetheart on October 17, 1953. Shortly after he joined the Navy to serve his country on the USS Wisconsin during the Korean War. When he returned from war they made their home in Bloomfield Hills and later Livonia, where they were members of St. Genevieve Parish, before settling in Milford in 1972. He went on to enjoy many years with the Ford Rouge Plant before retiring in 1986.
In his spare time, Gordie loved golf and Hartland Glen golf club where he was a member for many years. He played up until last year and enjoyed stopping in, even if it was just to play a few holes. He will always be remembered for his big personality, his sense of humor, his ability to laugh at everything and his boisterous singing. Singing was a big part of his life--he was the loudest at church and always sang to his family a joyous happy birthday each year. Gordie was a jokester, especially to his grandchildren, who he affectionately called his "knuckleheads" or 'monster kids', was truly a "Big Papa" to his great-grandkids and he always kept big jug of chocolate milk for them. Gordie cherished his time with his family and was ever a big figure in their lives.
In addition to Barbara, his sweetheart and wife of 61 years, Gordie is survived by his six children, Kevin Haggerty, Karen (Larry) DeVine, Colleen (Nick) Marano, Kim (John) Foley, Krys (Stan) Brish, Carolyn (Mike) Okmin; grandchildren, Kelly (Mike) Seebaldt, Tracy (Dominic) Bradley, Stephanie (fiance, Robbie Cahill) Cremonte, Christopher DeVine, Tera (Phill) Kulpa, John Marano, Gina Marano, Marli Marano, Jessica Foley, Carly Foley, Samantha (fiance, Christian Fusik) Brish, CJ Brish, Nick Brish, Emily Okmin, Conor Okmin, Erik Okmin, Cole Okmin; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Madison Seebaldt, Rosie and Emma Kulpa,Evelynn and Juke Cahill, baby boy Seebaldt due in June; siblings, Lawrence (d. Joni) Haggerty, Carol (John) Rodriguez and extended family and friends.
