Life story of "Sweet" Gordy Mattson

On March 9, 1961, Gordy was born in the back of a 1960 Fiat 500 in Detroit, Michigan and instantly dubbed "King" Gordy by his father. Gordy and his sisters; Cheri and Jill, were raised first in Ypsilanti and moved to Highland Twp. in 1971. Gordy attended Apollo Elementary, Highland Junior High and he was a 1979 graduate of Milford High School and has since been a proud Redskin for life.

Gordy's passion for family was second to none. His childhood provided countless stories and memories with family trips as well as their move to Highland where they built their home. Gordy continued many of the traditions of his childhood while he raised his own family.

Growing up, Gordy loved any and all sports. He was a passionate basketball player throughout high school. His freshman coaches mentored him through high school and have remained lifelong friends.

Always a music lover and gifted singer, he did not read music but could listen to a song and play the tune within a few tries. His big audition came in 3rd grade with Jeff Hanaford and Gordy's amateur musical pursuits never stopped.

In June of 1981, Gordy met Karen Gustafson for the first time on Hickory Ridge Road while being introduced by mutual friends. The two fell in love and were married on September 25, 1987 and their family was complete with the birth of their pride and joy - son Connor, on June 3, 1992. Life lovingly focused on all things Connor-not just with Gordy and Karen-but all the extended family members, too!

Gordy continued his passion for everything family, Milford and sports. He actively participated in coaching and officiating Connor's sports activities and thoroughly enjoyed working with kids of all ages. Gordy hung tight with his high school coaches through pickup basketball games whenever they could sneak into a local school gym. This relationship blossomed into a LOVE of all things MSU, most importantly football season. Gordy retained his title as "King" of the tailgate, he loved Saturday home MSU games!

Gordy's professional career started at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn working for his Uncle Ed and alongside his cousin Donnie. Gordy would carpool with his Dad for many years, driving home with Donnie while searching to pick up his Father who would run after work . . . literally until Gordy's car pulled over.

Grace Claiborn, a secretary for Ford suggested to Gordy that he may be interested in pursuing work at her husband's company. Dennis Claiborn hired him immediately and that lead to a 30 year association with Potter Claiborn & Geelhood/Computer Support Technology as a HVAC Sales Engineer.

Gordy was an extremely hard working, dedicated, loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and caring friend to many. In the words of his brother-in-law, Dan Dirmeyer . . . "who doesn't love Gordy?!?!" Gordy will always be remembered and deeply missed.
