Obituary for Helen Margaret Holman

Helen Margaret Holman of Milford, Michigan died at her home on Friday May 10, 2018 in the care of her sons and daughters-in-law. She was 96 years old.

Born July 31, 1921 in Battle Lake, Minnesota, she was one of three daughters and two sons of Alfred and Julia (Widness) Berg. She grew up on a farm in Everts Township, Minnesota, and worked in various local jobs including lending a hand baling hay when the ‘boys’ went off to fight in World War II. In 1944 she moved to Detroit where she found employment as a riveter building B29s at the Hudson Motor Plant in Detroit.

While working at Hudson Motor she met George Richard (Dick) Holman. Their courtship resulted in marriage on June 4, 1947 at Skibtvedt Lutheran Church located on the corner of her family's homestead near Battle Lake, MN. They were the last couple to be married in the small country church before it was torn down later that year. The newlyweds lived in Detroit before moving to St. Clair Shores in 1955 where they raised their two sons, Rick and Bob.

Margaret had a wide circle of friends from St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Eastpointe, her neighborhood in St. Clair Shores and her 20 years of volunteer work at Bi-County Hospital in Warren. Every summer, while her boys were growing up, she would take them back to the farm in Minnesota to spend time with their grandfather, and their aunts and uncles and cousins. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and her three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was also a much-loved aunt by her many nieces and nephews.

Two and a half years ago, she moved to the American House in Milford, Michigan, where she made many new friends and enjoyed playing cards. Recently she participated in a large "Rosie the Riveter celebration" at Willow Run Airport where she was honored as one of the few remaining ‘Rosies’. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family.

She is survived by her sons, Richard (Cynthia) Holman and Robert (Marianne) Holman; grandchildren, Bill (Kelly) Holman, Megan (J.R.) Briggs and Lauren Holman. Helen is also survived by six great-grandchildren; sister, Edith; as well as many extended family members and dear friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, George Richard Holman (d.1985) and step sons, William and John Holman.

Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty Street, Milford on Monday May 14, 2018 from 4-8PM.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty Street, Milford on Tuesday May 15, 2018 at 11AM, with visitation beginning at 10AM. Pastor Mark Hetzner to officiate.
