GRIEF & HEALING
affirmations to uplift & help you through
each stage of the grieving process.
Helen Hutton, age 79, of West Bloomfield, passed on December 6, 2016 after a cardiac event.
Helen was born on May 13, 1937 in Dundee, Illinois, the second child of six to Raymond and Edith (nee. Smith) Nehls. At the age of fourteen, Helen met the young Charles L. Hutton and they were married on October 16, 1954. Together they found balance—Helen was quiet and headstrong and Charles outspoken and talkative. Helen and Charles raised three daughters and four sons, moved to Michigan in 1963 and eventually built their home in West Bloomfield.
A true matriarch, Helen was a proud wife and mother, who brought structure and order to the family with a quiet grace. Her children, Audrey, Charles, Wanda, Jeffrey, Jill, Mark & Paul were blessed to be raised by such a strong, poised and loving woman. She led by example and taught her children to never give up in the face of adversity. She loved to read and had a strong belief in education. Even though she had a large family, Helen much preferred the experience of going out to dinner rather than making a meal at home. The only baking she enjoyed was making pies — she was famous for her blueberry pie and each fall she would create a homemade apple pie using apples from their tree. Helen and Charles loved to travel. They loved to pile their large family into the car for long vacations and travel the world.
She was liberal, worldly and wise. Helen was a brilliant architect and engineer who helped Charles create an automotive parts empire with a wholesale warehouse. She was the mastermind behind the scenes and could do anything she set her mind to.
Whether during first introductions or a personal conversation with a longtime friend, Helen left memorable impressions with people in her life. A people person at heart, she had a knack for making others feel comfortable in her presence.
A woman of few words, Helen was selfless and hardworking. She led her children and husband with an iron will, a big heart and an amazing spirit. She was always surrounded by loving family members and friends who will no doubt remember her by the plethora of happy memories and cherished moments her life provided.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her son, Mark and granddaughter, Courtney Brooke. She is survived by her children, Audrey, Charles Jr. (Cynthia), Wanda (Bob) Smith, Jeffrey (Jayne), Jill, Paul (Staci) and nine grandchildren. Also surviving is her nephew, Jerry (Chris) Burmeister; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Nehls, brother-in-law, Bud Westphal; also many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Michigan Humane Society.
