Henry Charles Vereecke, Jr., a native Detroiter, died on October 21, 2015 at the age of ninety-one.
He was preceded in death by his wife Fannie (Fishman) Vereecke in 2011 and is survived by his daughter, Sharon Pellar; sons, Larry (Judy) Vereecke, Charlie/Chuck (Elaine) Vereecke, Victor Vereecke, Gordie Vereecke; eleven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and counting (with two more on the way), and many nieces, nephews, and loving friends.
Henry, or Chuck, as he was known in his early years, was the eldest of his three brothers and took seriously the responsibilities of being a Big Brother, as well as enlisting in the U.S. Navy, serving on the destroyers USS Corry & Ringgold in World War II. Chuck and Fannie were married on June 30, 1948 and worked through many difficulties while raising five children during their lifelong marriage of sixty-three years. He spent most of his working life as a Teamster truck driver, and helped many a family member and neighbor as a street mechanic doing minor car repairs and brake jobs. He loved football, played it as a kid, supported his sons’ high school and college games, and really loved the Detroit Lions, for whom he was a lifelong season ticket holder since 1952. After his retirement, he spent many years as the neighborhood bicycle mechanic, did some brief tours as a Scout Master for his younger sons, and served as a church deacon. After moving out of his Detroit home he became Henry again to new people he met. He greatly enjoyed watching the old TV westerns and playing cards, especially Euchre and Cribbage. He was the patriarch of his family.
