Thomas Richards Dick Maynard IV, a long time resident of Commerce Township, died on June 5, 2013 after suffering a heart attack. He was 65 years old.
Born in Detroit, Michigan on October 16, 1947, the son of Thomas Richards Maynard III and Rosemary (Atkins) Maynard, Dick grew up in Detroit where he attended grade school at St. Monica and graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School. He later graduated with a degree in accounting from Wayne State University and began his career with positions at Price Waterhouse, Braun Engineering and the Masco Corporation. For the last twenty-one years he has enjoyed working with Numatics, with whom he served many years in treasury functions and in recent years as a Compliance Manager.
Widowed at a young age, Dicks life was complete when he met his soulmate, Karen Olbrecht Hermans, also widowed, through an introduction initiated by their mothers. They married on June 23, 1978 at Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak and and made their home in West Bloomfield before moving to Commerce Township where they have enjoyed fellowship at St. Marys Church and their home on Lake Sherwood for over thirty-three years. In his spare time, Dick enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, building decks, docks, shelves, and carving and painting wooden duck sculptures. He and Karen, inspired by their two-and-a-half years with Numatics in Germany and the European travels it afforded them, returned home and set out to see more of the United States. They had great trips to Alaska, National Parks throughout the country and the Cayman Islands where Dick enjoyed snorkeling and scuba diving. No matter where they were, they enjoyed every moment together.
Dick enjoyed a host of dear friends and will always be remembered for his big smile, his selflessness, and his ability to stay positive in any situation, even as he battled his health the last few years.
In addition to Karen, his beloved wife of thirty-five years, he is survived by his daughter, Dawn (Sam) Kuehl; sons, Tom (Sherri) Hermans, Russ Hermans and Tom (Annie) Maynard; grandchildren, Avery and Emma Kuehl, Elaine and Holly Hermans, and Jay and Max Maynard. He also leaves brothers, Pat (Michaele) McDonnell, Paul (Donna) Maynard, sister, Helen (Ray) Lipke and many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, work associates, pinochle club friends, and many, many other dear friends who join his family in mourning his passing and giving thanks to God for his life among them.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce Rd., Milford, on Monday, June 10, at 11AM with the Rev. Fr. Ron Anderson officiating. Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Sunday 2-8PM. Memorials may be made in his name to Community Sharing.
