Obituary for Irene Lawrence

Irene Lawrence, a longtime resident of Milford, died in the care of her family July 2, 2011. She was 84 years old.

Born July 6, 1926 in Palmyra, Tennessee, she was one of two daughters born to parents Arthur and Myrtle Katherine (nee. Jarboe) Rye. After her fathers untimely death in 1932, the girls and their mother moved north to Prescott, Michigan. After Irene graduated from Prescott High School in 1944, Irene moved to Detroit to join the clerical department of Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company.

Irene married Calvin Lawrence, who was also from Prescott, on October 12, 1946 in Standish, Michigan. Soon after, the young couple moved to Milford, Michigan where they operated a gas station and wrecker service for nearly forty years. Irene supported Calvin as he worked as a member of the Oakland County Mounted Division for many years. Irene, an active member of Milford United Methodist Church since 1948, served as a Sunday school teacher, Chairman of Christian Education, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for eleven years.

During her working years, Irene was employed by Precise Manufacturing Company (a tricycle factory) in Milford and later at Oakland County State Bank/Community National Bank and First Federal Savings Bank as a teller. Education was dear to Irenes heart and she served on the Huron Valley School Board from 1971 to 1979.

After raising three children, Kenneth, Keith and Karen, Irene returned to banking at Michigan National Bank and was promoted to manager of local branches. She retired from Michigan National Bank in 1988 and became a snow bird in Zephyrhills, Florida, residing next door to her sister and best friend, Fran Clark. Even in retirement Irene continued to be an active community member serving as President of the Corporate Board of Green Hills Estates and charter member of the Milford YMCA where she enjoyed water and stretch aerobics, giving her the energy to keep up with her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by Calvin her beloved husband of 48 years and her sister Fran (DeWayne) Clark. In addition to her children Kenneth (Brenda) Lawrence, Keith (Cindy) Lawrence, and Karen (Dr. Michael) Hritz, Irene is survived by her grandchildren Margaret Lawrence, Kelly (Sue) Lawrence, Melynda (Eric) Chrisman, Crystal (Stephen) Huber (Michaela and Addison), Allison (Michael) Slife, David Hritz; niece & nephew Lois (Tom) Armstrong; great-nieces & nephews Mark (Anne) Armstrong (Owen, Eli & Grady), Monica (Rustin) Phillips (Kellen and Grayson). She is also survived by extended family and a host of dear friends who mourn her passing and give thanks to God for Irenes life among them.
