Obituary for Jack Douglas Smith

Jack Douglas Smith, a long time resident of Highland, MI died suddenly on February 25, 2020. He was 77 years old.

Jack was born in Detroit, MI on September 17, 1942 to parents, David and Belva Smith. He grew up in Dearborn and attended Edsel Ford High School where he participated on the Football, Wrestling and Tennis teams. He graduated in 1960 and soon signed up for college courses at Henry Ford Community College before enrolling at Michigan State University. At MSU he wrestled and was a member of the ATO fraternity before graduating in 1965. He then went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan’s class of 1968.

While attending Henry Ford Community College, Jack met Carol Lorraine Mercer. They dated for a short time and the two were soon married at Garden City Presbyterian Church on August 21, 1965. They resided in Detroit until Jack decided to build his own home on Duck Lake in Highland in 1978. They raised their two children, Andrew and Amy at their home on Ramada Drive and had lots of fun enjoying the lake life.

Jack and Carol always spent time on the water but really adored the solitude of sailing. They charted sailboats into the North channel of Canada, parts of Greece, the Virgin Islands and Croatia. They loved it so much that they purchased their own 40 foot sailboat and Jack navigated the vessel all around our Great Lakes and into Canada.

Jack owned his own successful contracting business, ‘Process Piping and Equipment’ with his son, Andrew here in Milford for over 30 years. He was a hard worker and a true do it yourself kind of man. He could fix anything and everything that needed repair.

Jack D. Smith had a generous soul and an enormous heart. He was competitive, a bit feisty, anti-technology and a man who truly built his whole life with his own two hands and his family by his side.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Carol; son, Andrew (Carolyn) Smith; daughter, Amy Cubbin; grandchildren, Nathan, Brooklyn, Connor and Katherine as well as many close friends and extended family members.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents, David and Belva (nee. Sweet) Smith.
