Obituary for Jackson "Jack" Rice Baker

Jackson Rice (Jack) Baker, a life-long resident of Milford area, died at Huron Valley Hospital on Friday, September 9, 2022. He was 98 years old. Born on July 6, 1924, he was the fourth son of Earl and Bertha (Duncan) Baker of Clyde, Michigan. The youngest of the Baker brothers, as they were known hereabouts, Jack graduated from Milford High School in 1942 and joined the Army Air Corp, the predecessor of the U.S, Airforce and served honorably in World War II, flying 26 missions over Italy as a tail gunner in a B-24. He returned home to Clyde, where at a social in 1946 he met and fell in love with Virginia Wilson. They married on May 14, 1949 in Milford Presbyterian Church. At the time of her death, in 2012, they’d been married 63 years. Jack went to General Motors Institute – now Kettering University -- and went to work with G.M. as a quality control engineer with Fisher Body, a position he held for 36 years, retiring in 1980 at age 55.

Jack and Virginia bought a home on the corner of Canal and Crystal Streets in Milford in 1955 and raised their two sons, David and Steve, there, and never moved away. After their boys grew up and moved out west, Jack and Virginia kept busy in his retirement. She worked at the funeral home and he became the all-purpose handy man around the town taking care of the Presbyterian Church where they were members, the funeral home where they both worked part time, and helping those who didn’t have his gifts for fixing the broken, mending the worn out and salvaging the discarded.

Jack Baker loved playing golf, reading western novels, coffee with the guys most mornings at Americus, and sharing memories of a life well lived, a loving marriage, a long career and longer retirement. He was amiable, curious, genial and kind and lived life on life’s terms. He was a very easy man to like and, for his family, an easy man to love.

He is survived by his sons, David W. (Debbie) Baker and Stephen R. Baker; his grandchildren, Lauren E. Baker, Jackson W. Baker and Ashley E. Baker; his nieces, Bette Johnson and Barbara Blanden; his nephews, Gary, Brock, Scott and Tod Baker as well as many dear friends.
