Obituary for James Patrick Kraft

On Thursday, July 29, 2021, James P. Kraft, Sr. (“Jim”), loving husband and father of five boys, passed away at the age of 86. Jim was born on July 8, 1935 in Detroit, MI to George and Virginia Kraft. He and his first wife, Sharon Kraft, raised five sons, James Jr., Scott, John, Jerry, and Steven. He married Charlotte (“Charlie”) Bettis on July 31, 1999.

Jim grew up in the Detroit area, and graduated from St. Theresa High School in 1953. He became an accomplished, highly successful Automotive Industry Executive, specializing in the car interior trim market. Jim is enshrined at The Henry Ford Museum for his significant contributions to the market.

Jim was a great and humble man. He was brilliant, talented, kind, loving, courageous, athletic, and hilariously funny. He treated people from all walks of life with dignity and respect, yet he often stood before very prominent people of his era because of his skills and accomplishments. Jim enjoyed life to the fullest. He was an excellent baseball player, a good boxer, an avid boater who loved Northern Michigan summers, and was an exceptional story-teller.

Life’s simple pleasures brought Jim great joy. He loved to watch boaters go by his cottage on the Cheboygan River and enjoyed going out on the town with friends. He and Charlie relished entertaining, dining out, cooking at home, and putting on fabulous birthday and holiday parties.

Jim is survived by his wife, Charlotte (“Charlie”), his five children, James Jr. and wife Theresa, Scott, John, Jerry and wife Dana, Steven and wife Sarah; his seven grandchildren Heather, Hayley, Ryan, Madison, Olivia, Savanna and JJ, his cousin Phyllis, as well as several nieces and nephews. His amazing spirit lives on in all of them, and in others whose lives he touched.
