Obituary for James A. "Jim" McDonald

James A. Jim McDonald, a resident of Highland Township, passed away at Huron Valley Hospital in Commerce on Saturday, June 27, 2009. He was 73 years old. Born in Detroit on April 1, 1936, the son of Hiram & Louise McDonald, Jim grew up in Dearborn and graduated from Dearborn High School. Following graduation, he enlisted with the Marine Corps, serving his country proudly until he was medically discharged. Determined to finish his term of service, Jim later reentered the Military, this time with the United States Army. He returned home to begin his brief college study before finding his career with Ford Automotive Corporation - enjoying his work as a Purchaser for over 14 years. On July 15, 1961, Jim married Gayle Freedman, the love of his life. Mr. & Mrs. McDonald made their first home in Dearborn before moving to Westland. They later came to settle to their home in West Bloomfield where they began raising their sons, Matt & Jason. In 1972, he and Gayle began their tupperware company Opportunity Sales, and enjoyed success and partnership until retirement in 1998.

Jim enjoyed keeping his mind and body occupied. He could be found about the household engaged in home improvement projects and yard work, woodworking, patiently building model airplanes and cars, or, on a clear evening, staring into the night sky. In addition to his astronomical knowledge and brilliant mind, he held natural physical talents in all endeavors he attempted. Jim was a marvelous self-taught skier, formerly with Alpine Valleys Ski Patrol, and enjoyed repeated visits to Boyne Mountains and numerous slopes in Colorado. His greatest joys were always found in the company of his family and cherished grandchildren.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Gayle (nee Freedman) and sons, Matt (Melissa), Jason (Kathy); grandchildren, Grant, Jake, Nick, Katie, Jack and Elizabeth; sister, Betty (Jim) Hoeffel and brother, Gary Bill (Chris) McDonald. His numerous nieces and nephews including, Joy and John, and his faithful sidekick dog, Bella also survive.

A Funeral Service celebrating Jims life will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, Tuesday, June 30th at 11AM. Friends may visit on Monday 2-8PM. Memorials made to the American Heart and American Diabetes Associations appreciated. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
