Obituary for James Arthur Gibson

James (Jim) Arthur Gibson, 79, a longtime Milford resident, passed away on Monday, July 18, 2022.

Jim was born on February 22, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Wellington and Lauretta Gibson. He grew up in Milford, Michigan and was blessed to have met his future bride, Alexis Pentz, when he was a teenager. The two of them were married on October 12, 1963 and spent the next 58 years together in Milford, as well as Highland, before finally moving back to Milford in 2014.

Jim cherished and was proud of his family, especially his grandchildren. It was always a joy to be at their events to support and cheer them on. His grandchildren all loved his outgoing nature, to ride in his trailer that was towed behind the tractor, witty jokes, and spontaneous doughnuts in Grandma’s car on their property (while keeping it a secret from her, of course). Jim was an amazing father, and he instilled the values of life and family in his children and grandchildren.

He also loved NASCAR Racing, especially Dale Earnhardt. Jim created some lifelong memories with family at races in Michigan, Bristol (TN), and Daytona (FL). Even as a young man, Jim had a love of cars. He worked as a test driver, and eventually became a test engineer while working with General Motors for almost 40 years. He was proud to know that his grandson Ian just started an internship program with General Motors this week through Kettering University. Ian is the fourth generation Gibson to work at General Motors - which included his Great Grandfather (Wellington), Grandfather (Jim), Grandmother (Alexis), Mother (Rene), and Uncle (Joe).

Traveling on cruises became something he truly loved. He and Alexis saw some beautiful sights together which included Alaska, Europe, the Canadian Rockies. One of his most memorable cruising trips was with their children and their families traveled together to the Caribbean to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Jim and Alexis also enjoyed traveling to Florida, Hawaii, and the many destinations throughout the domestic United States. Jim and Alexis typically spent winters in Florida at Ocean Village, and always enjoyed their time and made some great friends along the way.

Beloved husband of Alexis for 58 years. Loving father of Jim Gibson (Rene) and Joe Gibson (Catherine). Proud grandfather of Ben, James, Sophie, Rebecca, Ian, and Sam. Dear brother of Ted Gibson (Vickie) and Kathryn Negoshian (Tom).

A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, July 22, 2022 at 11 am at the Milford Presbyterian Church located at 238 N. Main St. Milford, MI 48381. Jim was a lifelong member of the Milford Presbyterian Church.

Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to make a donation to either the Michigan Parkinson’s Foundation or the Michael J. Fox Foundation in memory of Jim.
