Obituary for James Doyle

James Doyle, a long time resident of Highland, and former Superintendent of Huron Valley Schools, died on June 15, 2019 at the age of 86.

James H. Doyle, Ph.D. was born on April 11, 1933 to Isabelle (McEliece) and Harry Doyle. Blessed with a sunny disposition, Jim enjoyed a wonderful childhood with his Kelly cousins, especially Peggy, who lived down the street from him in Detroit. When Jim was 9 and 10 years old, he was blessed with younger sisters, Kathy and Anne, whom he adored.

After graduating from St. Francis De Sales High School in 1951, Jim attended Wayne State University, where he was President of his fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. As a junior in his geography class, he met Donna Albright, and they quickly became inseparable. They married on February 4, 1956, the beginning of a long and wonderful marriage that was a partnership in every sense of the word. They started their married life in Texas and Arizona with the US Air Force, where Jim learned to fly and enjoyed the adventure of seeing new places.

After Jim’s stint in the Air Force, he and Donna moved back to Allen Park, Michigan, where they raised three children: Beth, Jim, and Diane. Jim was a hands-on father and spent many hours enjoying activities with them. Jim started his career in education teaching the 6th grade at Lindemann Elementary, went on to become Assistant Principal at North Junior High, and then became principal of Lapham Elementary. He quickly moved on to Assistant Superintendent of Lincoln Park Public Schools, and served as the Superintendent of the same district until 1983.

Jim finished his career working as the Superintendent of the Huron Valley School District. At that time, he and Donna moved to Duck Lake where they made a new and close group of friends. Jim taught himself to play golf and water ski, and reveled in being a grandfather. He was honored with the Michigan Superintendent of the Year Award as well.

Jim is survived by his wife of 63 years, Donna; his three children, Beth (Ed) Morris, Jim (Sarah), and Diane (Eric) Smith; his beloved grandchildren, Emily, Katie, and Molly Morris, Alex Brizard and Brendan Smith, and Brett and Ryan Doyle; his sisters, Kathy Brooks and Anne Doyle; his cousin, Peggy Charest; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Monday, June 24, from 4-8PM. A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 25, at 10AM.
