James Frederick “Jim” Sander, a resident of Highland Township died on September 22, 2016 after availing battle with lung cancer. He was 53 years old.
Born on October 28, 1962, the son of Stephen and Constance Booth Sander, Jim grew up in East Lansing where his love for sports and the Michigan State University Spartans began. Jim graduated from Central Michigan University with his Bachelor of science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. He also holds a Masters in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. It was at Central where he met his wife Julie. They married on June 15, 1991 at St. Joan of Arc Parish in St. Claire Shores.
He was a teacher, coach, and friend to many. Jim took his first teaching position at Durand High School in 1990 where he taught for seven years. In the fall of 1997 he began his teaching career at Milford High School. In addition to teaching Mathematics, Jim enjoyed coaching girls and boys golf, and girls basketball for many years. He believed in playing honestly and taught the importance of doing things the right way. As a coach and teacher, Jim helped to mentor many young people in all aspects of life. Jim taught until May of 2016, long enough to see his AP Calculus class through their exam. Jim was proudly inducted into the Milford High School Athletic Hall of Fame this past year.
Jim’s other love was golf. He golfed every day he could and enjoyed competing with friends at the Prestwick Village Golf Club and in amateur tournaments throughout Michigan.
When he was diagnosed with cancer, he approached it with the same diligence and optimism he used and taught throughout his life. “Let’s do it, we’ll get through this.”
In addition to Julie, his beloved wife of twenty-five years, he leaves his daughter, Jadyn; his sister, Constance (John) Starr; brother, Stephen Sander; in laws, Ronald and Janet Michalak; brothers in-law, Robert (Kathleen Michalak, Christopher Michalak, Brian Michalak and many nieces, nephews, extended family in both mourning his passing and giving thanks to god for his life among them. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Constance Sander.
