Obituary for James "Jim" Franklin Austin

James F. Austin, 76, of Highland, died on November 24, 2017.

Born in Southwest Detroit to a father (Frank) from South Carolina and mother (Wilma) from Kentucky, James Franklin Austin arrived on June 13, 1941. The oldest of three brothers, Jim was baptized at Gilead Baptist Church at the age of 12. His first job, at 10 years old, was a paper route for the Detroit Times Newspaper. Later on, Jim worked as a stock boy at SS Kresge Company. Jim spent each summer in South Carolina and graduated from Detroit’s Wilbur Wright Trade School in 1959. He initially worked for IBM as an automotive design consultant and then started his own automotive design/build business with lifelong friend, Bill Berry. Together, they created and sold a licensed automotive conveyor system via their firm, Sys-T-Mation. Their conveyor system has been widely adopted and is utilized by numerous domestic and foreign automakers throughout North America.

Jim was a loving husband, father and friend who enjoyed hunting, fishing, snow skiing, boating and golf. He raised his children, Brian and Skye, with responsibility and integrity. In 1994, he met Linda and married in November 1996. They spent the next 21 years together, traveling the world playing golf, fly fishing, snow skiing and hiking. Jim & Linda moved to the Prestwick Village golf community in 2001 where they made many additional friends and very much enjoyed the life they created together. Jim was a proud American, a fan of country music and passionate about his wife, family and friends (and, of course, golf!).

Jim made a profession of Faith as a boy and solidified his Faith in Christ later in life. His family and friends have lost a wonderful man.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Linda; son, Brian; daughters, Skye (Barry) Galvin and Summer (Rhett) Rowe; grandchildren, Bernadette, Rikki, Jillian and Madison; great grandchildren, Elias and Mia; brother, Don (Suzy) Austin; Jim is also survived by many, many loving family members and dear friends.

James is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Wilma Austin and his brother, John Austin.
