Janet Elaine Handyside (Spurlock), a resident of Highland Township, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Huron Valley Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township. She was 81 years old. Born on July 16, 1932 in East Detroit some time after her siblings, Walter (d. 1986), Thelma (d. 1993), and Glen (d. 1989), Janet was the youngest daughter of Walter Andrew Spurlock and Mary Emma Spurlock (Durham).
She grew up in East Detroit and graduated from East Detroit High School in 1950. Janet had been working since she was 14 years old at Federals Department Store in Roseville. When she graduated, Janet then went to work for U.S. Tire and Rubber in Detroit where she was working when she met Raymond Handyside in October, 1950 at the Log Cabin Restaurant. It was love at first sight, and on February 17, 1951, they married and settled in Roseville before moving to their longtime residence in Highland Township in 1962. Together, Janet and Ray were blessed with five children and remained in Highland to raise their family. They celebrated 58 wonderful years together until Raymonds death in September of 2009.
Although Janet had aspirations of becoming a nurse, her dreams took a turn after she married,
and she became a devoted wife and mother. She often said that she wore her life on her hands her wedding ring and her mothers ring. Her children and home were the center of her world, expanding as the family grew with spouses, grandchildren and then great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Handyside (d.2009), son, Stephen Elliott Handyside (d. 2003) and daughter, Beth Suzanne Lyons (d. 2008). Survived by her daughters, Janine (Gary) Sturm, Lynn (Chris) Rentfrow, Kelly (Ken) Clock; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and many loving friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 East Liberty, Milford, on Tuesday, July 1st, 11 AM. The Rev. Tom Roberts to officiate. Burial Cadillac Memorial Gardens East. Friends may visit on Monday 3 - 9 PM.
