Obituary for Jayne Irene Bickford

Jayne Irene Bickford, a resident of Milford, MI for 52 years, died on November 15, 2008. Born on December 4, 1923 in Ludington, MI, she was the daughter of Louis J. and Olga Anderson. Nicknamed Jayne Irene, the Village Queen, by a local Ludington baker, Jayne graduated from Ludington High School. In the spring of 1953, she met Norman K. Bickford on a blind date arranged by family & friends. Jayne was a little skeptical of this older man (he had gray hair and wore a hat) but she went anyway. Imagine her surprise when she found out he was actually 3 years younger than her. They were married on January 16, 1954 and moved to Allen Park with Nancy in tow (she was promised a television set and a baby sister or brother). That baby, a sister named Beth, was born on January 12, 1955 and one year later, the family moved to Milford and opened their business on Main Street, Bickford Home & Auto (aka The Firestone Store) serving the local community for 23 years. Starting in 1960, Norm and Jayne began spending time during the winter in Florida and continued to do so until Norms death in 2002. Jayne loved to swim and could be found daily at the condos pool amazing everyone with her ability to float vertically in the water without moving her arms or kicking her legs!
Jayne had many interests and hobbies. She was a good bridge player and she and Norm participated in the local Dance Club at the American Legion Hall. She enjoyed golfing (most of the time), bowling and was an expert shopper, anywhere, anytime. It was a great disappointment to her that neither one of her girls liked shopping as much as she did so she especially enjoyed shopping, as she was known to say, all around the sap bush with Megan. Her Swedish heritage made her an excellent cook. Most everyone has a favorite recipe of hers. Perhaps her greatest accomplishments were those involving sewing and needlepoint. A perfectionist at heart, she made dresses, suits, Halloween costumes, coats, curtains and even a wedding dress. She is famous for her Christmas needlepoint stockings having made over 20 of them for family and friends. Jayne was a member of the Milford United Methodist Church for over 50 years and served on many committees, dinners, rummage sales and as a cast member in all the productions of Showtime, a vaudeville-type music and comedy show presented by the church for many years. She took pride in her home and especially enjoyed gardening and decorating for Christmas, her favorite holiday.
In addition to her daughters, Nancy Weeks and Beth (Jerry) Johns, Jayne is survived by her grandchildren Matthew (Erin Leslie) Weeks, Megan Weeks, Michele (Brett) Kotrba, Richard (Andrea) Johns; great-grandchildren Avery and Drew Kotrba and many extended family members, cherished friends and long-time neighbors.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Milford United Methodist Church, 1200 Atlantic Street, Milford on Wednesday, November 26 at 12PM with Pastor Gregg Mayberry officiating. Friends may gather at the church from 10:30AM until the time of Service. Memorials may be made to The Milford United Methodist Church.
