Jeanette Rutkowski, of Au Gres, and a long time resident of Highland, Michigan died on October 24, 2012, surrounded by family, a day after her 98th birthday. Born in Detroit on October 23, 1914, she was the daughter of James and Carrie (Schroeder) Holmes. On June 24, 1939 she married John Stanley Rutkowski in Detroit. After he retired from the Detroit Police Department, they moved to Highland and when he died in 1976, Jeanette moved in with her daughter Janice and son-in-law, Jim Dunleavy. She loved her grandchildren and became an indispensable fixture in their lives -- a great cook and confidant and good example to the younger generation she helped to raise, she was known for her galumpkis, her warm smile, her love of bowling which she did until she was 88 and the never more than two vodka tonics she would often have. Gi Gi, as she was known to her great-grandchildren, was best known for her constant and abiding faith, how she was always said, God Bless You! when they were coming or going. They all grew up knowing that whenever there was trouble, to call Grandma, to light a candle and say a prayer.
Jeanette Rutkowsi was preceded in death by her husband John Stanley Rutkowski in 1976, and is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Rutkowski of Berkley and Janice (James) Dunleavy of Au Gres; grandchildren, James (Kathy) Dunleavy, Julie (Terry) Merwin, Jonathan (Victoria) Dunleavy; great grandchildren, Lauren Hudson, Kaitlyn Dunleavy, Jacob Dunleavy, Buck Hudson, Colin Dunleavy, and Leslie Rose Merwin.
