Obituary for Jerry Hahn Gillen

Jerry Hahn Gillen, of Wixom, and more recently of Southfield, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2020. He was 77 years old.

Son of the late John Lee and Vena Gillen, Jerry is survived by his son, Brendan (Amber) Gillen; siblings, Susan (Earl) Montgomery, Jack (Barbara) Gillen, and Dick (Tracy) Gillen; and Karen Stevens who spent the last 35 years by his side; also many extended family and dear friends.

Jerry and his whole family are alumni of Michigan State University. He has resided in Union Lake, Clarkston, Milford, Wixom and most recently in Southfield. He had a uniquely deep take on history and literature and poetry, from Blake and e.e. cummings, to Kerouac and Ginsberg.
Jerry’s son was named after Irish Poet Brendan Behan and a novel by Samuel Beckett.
He deeply loved mythology and his prize possession was the Unabridged version of the Golden Bough. He loved music in many forms, with a close affinity for Jazz and American music.
He had an obsession with Detective stories, from books by Dashiell Hammett and Elmore Leonard, to every single iteration of every Sherlock Holmes story and every single adaptation of every Agatha Christie story. His greatest passion was film, from profound to just plain pure entertainment. Jerry’s favorite films were The Searchers, Man from Laramie, and the John Ford cut of My Darling Clementine among many others. His top 10 lists of any type of film genre could be at least 100 films long.
