Obituary for Jerry John Goodwin

Jerry John Goodwin of Milford and San Marcos, CA died at his home early Tuesday morning, November 21, 2017 after a long illness. He was 70 years old. Born on July 24, 1947 in Kewanee, IL as the second of four children to John Robert Goodwin and Mabel “Bo” Goodwin (Griffith), Jerry was raised in the city of Detroit, where he attended Catholic schools.

After his father died when he was 16, Jerry decided to follow the path of his Uncle Nick into the United States Marine Corp (joining on October 4, 1964, exactly 10 years before the birth of his second son) just as hostilities in Vietnam were rising. He served one tour in Vietnam, based primarily at Da Nang Air Base. Less than a year after his honorable discharge in 1968, Jerry met Regina Hernandez while they both worked for Michigan Bell. They were married on November 14, 1969. Their first son Michael was born a year later and son Scott in 1974. Jerry worked through the 1970s for Federal Mogul as a lab tech/engineer before he started moonlighting for Barfield Manufacturing in Ypsilanti, MI in 1979, the same year he moved his family to Westland. He would work full-time at Barfield (later Exemplar) until 1998, leaving as Director of Engineering. In 1999, with partners Michael Garver and Anthony Snoddy, Jerry launched MAThread, Inc., based on their invention of the world’s first anti-crossthreading fastener, where he served as an executive until 2016.

In the last two decades of his life, Jerry toured the world with Regina and his family, traveling throughout Europe, South America, Asia, Australia and even Antarctica, an adventure he would remember as his most awe-inspiring. Jerry and Regina bought a house in Milford in 1999 and a house in San Marcos, CA in 2001. He loved golfing with his sons, playing with his grandchildren Presley and Coulter and watching the Detroit Tigers on TV.

Preceded in death by his sister Ricka, Jerry is survived by his wife Regina (48 years), sons Michael (Tina) and Scott, grandchildren Presley and Coulter, brothers Michael (Martha) Goodwin and David (Margie) Goodwin.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Sunday, November 26, 2017 from 3-7 PM.
