Obituary for Joan Fay McEvoy

Joan McEvoy, 94, of Milford, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.

A devout woman of faith, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Joan loved her family and leaves a legacy of love and education with all who crossed her path.

She was born in Fargo, North Dakota on February 19, 1928 to the late Lyle and Emma Davis. A child of the Great Depression, Joan always found ways to save, reuse, recycle and make extra money throughout her life. She valued education and instilled that in all of her children, of whom she was very proud. She had a unique sense of humor, a true competitive spirit, and a zest for life.

Joan came to Detroit, Michigan and worked for Ford Motor Co. as a secretary, eventually retiring from the Detroit Public Schools after 18 years of service. She would meet her future husband, David J. McEvoy, Jr. on a blind date and would later marry on June 11, 1955. They were married 45 years when he passed in 2000. The two of them raised five children. At one point, they had 5 children under 8 years of age. Her family always enjoyed the summer trips back to Fargo, North Dakota, spending time with cousins and extended family.

Always an athlete, Joan loved sports and competed not only with family and friends but later in life in the Senior Olympics as well, winning numerous medals and traveling near and far. An avid softball player, she started playing as a young woman in Fargo and continued well into her 80’s. She enjoyed tennis and played in a doubles league in South Lyon as well. In her free time, she loved her coffee, dessert, doing crafts, teaching herself calligraphy and just spending time with family. A major love was watching sports on TV, preferring college sports over professional. Always displaying a competitive nature, she made many simple activities a contest. Joan was also a breast cancer survivor and was even honored as Volunteer of the Year for Encore, her breast cancer support group. She was also very industrious around the house, fixing things, or collecting parts to build bicycles, roller skates and skateboards from scratch. Joan was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Beloved wife of the late David J. McEvoy, Jr. Loving mother of David J. McEvoy III (Marilyn), Daniel McEvoy, Sheila McEvoy, Monica Doerr (Dennis), and Patricia Goonis (Matthew). Devoted grandmother of Eric McEvoy (Charlotte), Emma Goonis, Alayna McEvoy (fiancé Shane Kennedy),Tessa Goonis, and George Goonis. Proud great-grandmother of Adelyn Jane McEvoy. Dear sister of the late June Kaeding (the late Melvin), the late Dorne Davis (the late Irene), and the late Jean Ketcham (the late Frank). She had many nieces and nephews who loved and respected her.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 22, 2022 from 2:00pm - 8:00pm at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 404 E. Liberty St. Milford, MI 48381.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 11:00am at the funeral home, with commitment ceremony immediately following at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.

Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to make a donation to either the Michigan Humane Society or the Covenant House in Joan’s memory.
