Obituary for Joanne Galleher Boyle

Joanne Galleher Boyle, of La Mesa, California, died at home on December 1, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She was 76 years old. Beloved wife of retired Judge Martin L. Boyle, formerly of Milford, she was a prominent banker, community leader and volunteer and the devoted matriarch of a large extended family.

Born in Detroit and raised in Dearborn, MI, Joanne was the first of four children of James and Barbara (Gilpin) Galleher, in a family that included siblings, Barbara Janice Motisi (Phil) of El Cajon, CA, Marilyn Stephenson (Gerald) of Waterloo, ON and James Galleher (Nina) of Woodhaven, MI.

Her adoring family includes a host of nephews and nieces, their families, two stepdaughters and families and Martin's children and their families.

Joanne began her banking career in Detroit, moving to the Los Angeles area in 1957. There she worked for a number of banks, holding increasingly more responsible managerial and executive positions. In 1972, she relocated to San Diego, helping to establish Grossmont Bank in La Mesa (now California Bank and Trust). She retired from the bank in 1992 after serving as Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, member of the Board of Directors and Corporate Secretary.

Following retirement, Joanne joined the Board of Directors of Grossmont Hospital. She served on the Executive Committee including two years as Chair of the Board. She also served on the Board of the Grossmont Hospital Foundation, completing her term as Chair in October of this year.

Earlier, she worked as a volunteer with various community organizations, including the Soroptomists, Boys and Girls Club, and the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce, where she was the first woman to serve as President. More recently, Joanne was a volunteer with Sharp Hospice.

In 2009, in recognition of her outstanding community service, Joanne received the Grossmont Foundation Volunteer of Distinction Award and the Grossmont Healthcare District Healthcare Hero Award.

She was an avid reader and skier, who also enjoyed music, traveling and dancing. Most of all, she enjoyed her family and family activities.

Joanne was first diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma over twelve years ago, a fact revealed to very few. She was committed to living her life to the fullest on her terms, refusing to let a disease define who she was.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30AM on Friday, December 7, at St Martin's Catholic Church, La Mesa. The Very Reverend James Paulsen will officiate. Following cremation, her ashes will be buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Milford. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to the Grossmont Hospital Foundation, Sharp Hospice Care or a charity of the donor's choice.
