John James Lavelle, 71, and husband of the late Judy, for 31 years, passed away on June 25, 2021.
John was born on May 11, 1950 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Joseph and Mary Lavelle. He grew up in Detroit and graduated from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School in 1968. Following high school, John went to college at Michigan State University, where he met the love of his life, Judy Oxley. It was when John met Judy that life took on a new meaning and purpose. He remained a lifelong MSU fan.
Through his wife, John took a job at Detroit Coil and worked for them for many years. When he wasn’t working, family was everything to John. He always enjoyed adventures with the family, traveling to many national parks, and was proud to have been to all of the lower 48 states.
John was an avid gardener, and always enjoyed gardening with Judy. He was very detailed and organized, to say the least. He enjoyed electronics, movies, cycling, photography, and story telling. He had a way to capture your attention and share with vividness all the details to keep you on the edge of your seat. He has a unique but great sense of humor and quick wit. John also enjoyed rooting for the underdog, which was very fitting for him as he was always looking out for the underprivileged and the most vulnerable. These values of selflessness were instilled in his children as well.
John was faithful to his sobriety for nearly 45 years, which gave him clarity in life, along with a dedication and commitment to others that helped so many people over the years. It was his love of Judy and commitment to her as well that made him the man he was. He will be forever loved by not only his family but many strangers who were fortunate enough to cross his path, or hear one of his stories about life. John will be greatly missed.
Loving father of Michael John Lavelle and Christopher Joseph Lavelle. Brother of Joe Lavelle (Jennifer) and Katherine Neuser (Bill). Uncle and great uncle of many nieces and nephews and their families.
