Obituary for John Paul Richert

John Paul Richert of Milford, previously Rochester Hills and Warren, died on Tuesday, August 13th after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. He was 80 years old. Born on October 26, 1938 in Carnegie Pennsylvania to Paul and Thelma (Lynch) Richert, he moved to Michigan as a young child. He grew up in Warren and attended school in Van Dyke Public Schools, a district that would become a cornerstone of his life and distinguished career.

After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1957, he attended Harding College in Arkansas and then returned to Michigan, earning his Bachelor and two Masters’ degrees at Eastern Michigan University. He began his lifelong career in public education as a physical education teacher, eventually becoming a district social worker, principal, and Assistant Superintendent of Instruction for Van Dyke Public Schools. He retired from that position in 1998, at which time the library at Lincoln Middle School was named in his honor. Working with young people was his lifelong passion. Upon his retirement, he was quoted as saying that one of the most rewarding aspects of his career was seeing former students, “who have grown into fine adults.” He said he doesn’t define successful people by their salaries, but whether they are moving forward with their lives.

The district from which John graduated and retired, is also where his father worked as a custodian and where he eventually met his wife Vikki where she worked as a school secretary. They were married in 1966 and lived in Warren until eventually moving to Rochester Hills where they raised their only son, Lance. John was a very active and loving father, enjoying sports, golf, fishing, and hunting with Lance. He had a wide circle of friends with whom he golfed, played cards, and travelled. He was a friend to all he met. In later years, he loved spending time, playing and joking, with his two grandchildren, Luke and Claire, who loved their Grandpa John. John said, “I decided I liked working with young people and I always had a great experience with young people.” As such, there are countless people who would say the same about their experience with John.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Vikki; son, Lance (Natalie) Richert; grandchildren, Luke and Claire Richert; sister, Patricia Carter; nieces and nephews, Brett (Diane) Turner, Traci (Joe) Zayance and Erich (Theresa) Bolinger as well as many dear friends and extended family members.

A Memorial Service will be held at Lynch and Sons, 404 E. Liberty st., Milford on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 2:00PM with gathering to begin at 1:00PM. The Rev. Msgr. John Budde to officiate.
