Obituary for John A. Mitchell

John A. Mitchell, a resident of Sterling Heights and a former resident of Highland, died peacefully after a prolonged illness, surrounded by his family, on October 7, 2017.

John was born on June 14, 1951 in Pontiac, Michigan, the oldest child to William and Lois (nee. Gateley) Mitchell and grew up in Milford. John had a lifelong love of sports — he was proud to be a Milford Redskin, managed several teams in high school and knew every stat from his favorite teams. Following graduation from Milford High School in 1970, John began his twenty five year career as a custodian with Huron Valley Schools. In 1981, John met Carol Tuer at a mutual friend’s retirement party at Hector and Jimmy’s Restaurant in Milford and eight months later, on December 19, 1981, the couple married. John and Carol made their home in Highland and were blessed with three daughters, Catherine, Erin and Ashleigh.

John was a gracious, kind, generous man who centered his life on his faith in God and his deep love for his family. His greatest joys in life were experienced being a loyal husband, a devoted father and loving grandfather. He was active with the Knights of Columbus through Church of the Holy Spirit, was a member of Miford JCs and the Order of DeMolay in Milford. Following his retirement in 2001, John spent as much time as possible enjoying his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He was quiet and reserved until you got to know his silly sense of humor. He loved music, musicals and could fall asleep anywhere. John will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially his beloved wife of nearly 36 years, Carol; his daughters, Catherine Chrobak, Erin (Mike) Statham, Ashleigh (Scott) Lawhorn; grandchildren, Nikolas and Marina Clarke, Liam Chrobak, Lillian, Rosalie and Violet Statham, Delia Aldrich; brother, James (Nancy); sisters, Susan (Jerry Wolfe), Cheri (Tom) Kowal; mother in law, Loretta Tuer (the late Norman Tuer, Sr.), as well as many, many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lois Mitchell.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty Street on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Noon, with visitation beginning at 10:30 AM.

Memorial contributions may be made to his family, c/o Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford.
