Obituary for John Clayton McDonell

John Clayton McDonell, Jr. a resident of Milford, former resident of Flint and native of Garden City, died on January 4, 2014 after suffering a heart attack. He was 57 years old.

Born in Detroit on August 2, 1956, the son of John Clayton McDonell and Norma Turnbull McDonell, John grew up in Garden City where he graduated from Garden City West High School in 1974. An avid sportsman, he played center on the basketball team and tight end on the schools football team. Following high school he attended Central Michigan University, where he met Janine Paulley. It was love at first sight and they married on December 28, 1974 in Garden City. They made their home in Brighton and later moved to Flint where they lived for 25 years. In 1999, they moved to Milford to be closer to Johns family.

At 18, John joined Iron Workers Local 25. He went on to work with Bristol Steel in Davison for over thirty-five years. Even in retirement he continued with Bristol as an estimator with the company.

He was a clever man, and delighted in showing this through his morning crossword and Sudoku puzzles. A born competitor, he challenged himself with fishing and golf, always striving for his best. He loved watching football, especially the Lions and the Michigan Wolverines. He took great pride in maintaining a fantastic home for his family: His yard was always immaculate and his epic meals were the stuff of legend and fit for armies.

He is survived by Janine, his beloved wife of 39 years; his daughters, Sarah and Jennifer; father, John Clayton (Janet) McDonell; sisters, Vicki (Steven) Ritten, Cynthia (Phillip Jurgens) McDonell, Elizabeth (Nicholas) Pritula, Heidi (William) Parent; sister-in-law, Dolores Levi; brother-in-law, John Paulley, Bernard (Ellen) Paulley, Jr.; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Zachary, and Madelyn Ritten, Nicholas and Jacob Pritula, and Ryan (Jennifer) and Brandon (Jennifer) Parent, Caroline Thibert, John Paulley, Jr., Lisa Paulley, and Tiffany DeMara; many dear friends and associates with Bristol Steel and Iron Workers Local 25 who join his family in both mourning and giving thanks to God for his time spend with them. His mother, Norma McDonell, his in-laws, Bernard and Elizabeth Paulley, Sr. and sister-in-law, Bette Jane DeMara, preceded him in death.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Friday, January 10, at 11AM with Fr. Clint McDonell officiating. Friends may visit on Thursday, January 9, from 2-9PM. Memorials may be made to the family for his daughters education fund. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
