Obituary for John H. LaClair

John LaClair, a lifelong resident of Milford, died on Saturday, October 3, at U of M Hospital after a two year battle with cancer. He was 62 years old. Born on May 7, 1947 in Detroit, he was the son of Harold and Jean (Barbour) LaClair. The family moved to Milford when he was a child and he graduated from high school in 1965. In 1966 he started iron work and completed his apprenticeship in 1972. He worked for 33 years as a member of Iron Workers Local 25 of Detroit, retiring in 1999. On September 9, 1978 he married his sweetheart, Cynthia McCandless and they raised their family in Milford.
Mr. LaClair was a member of Sons of the American Legion and a lifetime member of Brothers of the Hammer Motorcycle Club. He loved snowmobiling in St. Helen, dirt biking with his boys, keeping "the nicest lawn on the block," which required chasing moles with an axe and mowing the grass at least twice a week. He loved his grandchildren and built a new pool just this summer for them to enjoy. A selfless man of few words, who played as hard as he worked while ruling with an iron fist, a big heart, and a good spirit.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Cindy, his daughter, Angela (Adam) Leonard and sons, John and Jeff LaClair, and grandchildren, Carley, Alex and Olivia. His mother, Jean LaClair, brothers, Bob (Jan) LaClair, Larry (Pam) LaClair, Dale (Carol) LaClair, and sisters, Carol (Dee) Paggeot and Linda LaClair also survive as do many nieces, nephews and dear friends who join with his family in mourning the death of a great man and giving thanks to God for his life among them.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 11 AM at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford. Rev. Gary Evans will officiate. Burial will follow in Milford Memorial Cemetery. Friends may visit on Tuesday from 6-9PM and Wednesday from 3-9PM. Memorials appreciated to Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 216, 510 W. Commerce, Milford, MI 48381. For further information call 248-684-6645.
