John Hubert Meyer, a resident of Commerce Township and former resident of Garden City, died on February 9, 2016 at the age of 86.
Born on May 16, 1929, the son of John and Dorothea (Liverance) Meyer, John grew up in Detroit and attended University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy. After high school, John studied at the University of Detroit. In 1950, John joined the Air Force to serve his country for four years during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1954, John returned to Michigan and went to work with Dow Chemical. Shortly afterwards, he began a long career with Ford Motor Company, where he worked for 38 years as a glass research engineer. He took great pride in his work, earning many patents along the way.
John married the love of his life, Bridget, on October 11, 1952. They made their home in Garden City, where they raised four daughters, Mary Jo, Sherri, Barbara, and Julianne. He was a loving father and grandfather who always put his family first. His lasting gift to his children was a Catholic education for 12 years.
John and Bridget moved to Milford in 1978, where John was active with the Milford Senior Center and with the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening, trips to the casino, Tigers baseball and a good pot roast. In his younger years, John was known to eat 3 complete turkey dinners at Thanksgiving. We find it amusing that he died on "Fat Tuesday!" John was an avid golfer. He was often described as a gentleman. He was a quiet man who worked hard and was faithful to God and his family. John was a humble, kind and gentle person. He was often seen at morning Mass. He had a strong faith in God and he will be dearly missed.
He was preceded in death by Bridget, his beloved wife of fifty years, in 2002, and is survived by his daughters, Mary Jo (Michael) Ervin, Sherri (Dale) Stelmach, Barbara Meyer, Julianne Meyer-Sorek (Patrick Sorek), nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; special friend, Mary Jo Fritz; sisters, Barbara (the late Robert) Suran and Beverly (Ray) Misch and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
