Obituary for John J Shepherd

John J. Shepherd, of Hartland Township, passed away in the loving care of his family on October 27, 2015. This past summer John was diagnosed with stage IV Lung cancer and after recent unforeseen events made his peace with the physical world and has gone on to a better place.

Born in Flint, Michigan, December 4, 1955, John was the fifth of eight children. As an infant, John moved with his family to Harbor Springs, Michigan. There he enjoyed winters spent playing in mountains of snow and summers spent in the lovely Emmet county countryside and in the blue waters of Lake Michigan or just hanging around in the quaint little town he always loved.

As a child, John was a passionate musician. When his older brother joined the Navy in 1967, he passed down his guitar to a 12 year old boy who will forever be remembered by his family with a guitar in his hands. Coming of age in the 60s and 70s, John was a loyal fan of The Beatles, and shared his love of fab four with his children, who happily accepted the indoctrination and will always cherish those memories. His deep love of music brought joy to his life and was a place John could always find happiness.

John was also an insatiable athlete, who was so eager to play football that he forged his mother's name on the required player permission slip when he was too young to play - but, his love of sports ultimately won his mother over, which is evident in the numerous newspaper clippings she saved until her death. In high school, John was a star football player and was very proud to be a Ram at Harbor Springs High School! He even continued playing softball and hockey into his adult life.

John attended Central Michigan University and earned a degree in journalism. After college John moved to the greater Detroit area where he began work alongside his brother at Plymouth Plumbing. John then went on to work with his sister in industrial measurements and has most recently been self-employed in that field.

John will be remembered for his bright and caring personality, his sense of humor, and his ability to find great profundities in life from even the most mundane. His wit and compassion were always present, which allowed John to easily make friends throughout his lifetime.

John enjoyed, tremendously, playing the comically frustrating game of golf, in particular with the J Bod Team and family - being outside, hitting some balls, and drinking some beer. John was also a committed Detroit Red Wings, Tigers, and Lions fan. Even just days before his death he knew how the Lions' season was looking.

John was also an animal lover, just like his mummsy.

John had a large and caring family, but will undoubtedly be missed most deeply by his loving wife of 29.5 years, Marie, and his children. John was an incredibly committed husband and father, and a dearly loved friend to so many people. John was so devoted to his family that he worked tirelessly to provide all he could for those he loved. Family was his heart and soul - the home and life he worked so hard to build was all for them.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Marie; children, Kristie (Dave) McCaw, Nathan (Emily), Sarah; grandsons, Liam and Connor; siblings, Ramona (Tom), Nancy (Joel), Nathan (Tammy), Kennie Lee (Tom), Leilani (Todd), Kirsten, Tor; in-laws, Louise (the late Greg), Sue (Big Al), Janine, Carole (Al); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceeded in death by his loving mother Dorothy Braeger-Larsen and in-laws Mom and Dad O.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St, Milford on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 11 AM with visitation beginning at 10 AM. Friends may visit the the funeral home on Friday, October 30th from 5-8 PM.
