Obituary for John Paul "Jack" Thoresen

John Paul Jack Thoresen, a resident of South Lyon, and former long time resident of Farmington, died on April 27, 2012. He was eighty-three years old.
Jack was born on April 5, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Paul and Mary (Nold) Thoresen and grew up in Detroit, where he graduated from Catholic Central High School. He went on to work with Detroit Diesel, with whom he was Director of Accounting, for over forty years. On February 3, 1951, he married Patricia Cucchi at the Holy Name Catholic Church in Birmingham. They made their home in Detroit, and in 1955, moved to Farmington where they lived for many years and raised their six children. Fatherhood was ever his greatest joy, and his six children felt that joy, his love and devotion every day of their lives. His most treasured memory was the special way his children welcomed him home from work many days at their position on the street corner, flagging him down as he turned the corner, and climbing in the car to accompany him the rest of the way home.
Throughout his life Jack was an avid golfer and reader, and especially enjoyed books dedicated to histories, music and biographies. He was a self-taught piano player and was a musical scholar with a wealth of knowledge about Jazz music, especially. His love of Jazz music afforded him the opportunity to amass a large library of records and enjoy opportunites to share the music with those he thought might be helped or encouraged by it. He was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. He wore his Thors Hammer medallion every day as a testament to his heritage and strength. Jack loomed large in his familys life, and their mighty Thor and his great character will be so very dearly missed. His six children will carry on his legacy with pride.

In addition to Patricia, his beloved wife of over sixty-one years, he is survived by his adoring children, Michael (Nancy) Thoresen of Ann Arbor, Linda Thoresen Schmitt of Sacramento, CA, Tom Thoresen of Arlington, MA, Mary Jo (Curt Clingman) Thoresen of Berkeley, CA, Patty (Chuck Phillipson) Thoresen of Wixom, Susan (Tomio Narita) Thoresen of San Francisco, CA; grandchildren, Rob and Steph Schmitt, Erin, Justin, Katy, Eliza, and Erik Thoresen, Jack and Abbey Phillipson, Juliana and Kaelynn Narita and great grandson, Fitzcarraldo Schmitt Ness. Also surviving are his sisters, Judy McDonald, Kathleen (Ed) Schlaff, and Elizabeth Springer, his sister-in-law, Mary (Joe) Depman and many nieces, nephews and dear friends who join his family in mourning his passing and giving thanks for his life among them.

A time of gathering will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Sunday, April 29th, from 12-8PM. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
