Obituary for John W. Coble

John "Jack" W. Coble died peacefully on June 21, 2018 at the age of 90.

John William Coble was born on May 15, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan, one of three children to John H. and Lillian Coble. He spent most of his childhood in Oklahoma and Detroit, and at the age of sixteen, John went aboard a ship in New York and served his country as a Merchant Marine, transporting supplies and equipment to troops during World War II.

Upon his return to Detroit, John met the young Florence Fayert in a factory where they both worked. Florence was often late to work after relying on the transportation system, and John offered to drive her. Their love quickly flourished and they married on June 20, 1953. The couple would celebrate sixty five years together before John died on June 21, 2018 at the age of 92.

John’s love of helping others and his gregarious nature suited him well for his career as a cab driver in Southfield and Detroit areas. He owned his own taxicab and was proud of it. John and Florence made their home in Detroit, then Farmington until settling in Highland in 1976.

Their life in Highland was full and busy. John was an active parishioner of Church of the Holy Spirit where he attended every Sunday, was a Knight, a member of the men’s club as well as an usher and eucharist minister for many years. John kept busy working on his home, painting, gardening and cooking. He loved to share his garden with all and he was especially proud of his tomatoes which grew more abundant each year. He brewed his own table wine, which he shared generously, from the grapes he grew on his fence.

John was an artist in both painting and sculpture. He was proud of his own oil paints and his home was a gallery of sculptures and paintings. A lot of his art reflects his belief of Jesus or the the disciples.

He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty five years, Florence Coble; his sister, Alice; brother, Leonard, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was a great neighbor and was surrounded by the same where they all looked out for each other. He became "Farmer John" by a little girl named Lizzy, a neighbor. He was pretty well known as "Farmer John" and called himself the same.

He will be missed by many.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 Harvey Lake Road, Highland on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 10 AM, with visitation beginning at 9 AM. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
