Obituary for Joseph Walter Sanders

Sgt. Joseph Walter Sanders, a life long resident of Milford Twp. and 38 year member of the police department passed away January 10, 2012 in the care of his loving family. He was 69 years old.

Born on the 4th of July in 1942 in Pontiac, he was the son of Joseph Edwin and Mary (Cairns) Sanders. He grew up in the township, on Sears Lake in a blended family of half-siblings and adopted ones. After graduation from Milford High School in the Class of 1961, he served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army, returning in 1965 to begin what would become his distinguished thirty-eight year career with the Milford Township Police Department. It was after returning from Vietnam he began courting his classmate, Shirley Boyer to whom he was married on the Feast of All Souls, November 2, 1968 at St. Marys Church in Milford.

Joe Sanders loved his community and its citizenry and took seriously the police departments mission to serve and protect. He knew everyone in town and though he sometimes had to bust the kids of friends or friends of his own kids, he always treated them with courtesy and respect and was regarded as a great cop because of it.

His love for fishing was a pure passion which he shared with his own kids and grandkids, teaching them how to fish for salmon and steelhead and trout in Michigans lakes and streams. For many years he was a regular at the Vacation Trailer Park on the Betsy River where he fished with Don McCraner and a host of other locals of all ages who were glad for the chance to fish with Joe. He loved traveling with his camper or fifth wheel, taking his kids and grandkids on trips to Tennessee and Kentucky or throughout northern Michigan where he taught them to love the out of doors. Joe was generous with his friendships and was always willing to help in anyway he could.

Preceded in death by his mother Mary Sanders and brother Donald Marsh.

In addition to Shirley A. Sanders, his beloved wife of 43 years, Joe is survived by his loving sons Joseph W. (Roberta) Sanders and William B. (Ruth) Sanders; granddaughters Kathleen, Karlee and Kirsten; grandsons Aidan, Everett and Gavin; father Joseph E. Sanders; sisters Dorothy Hass and Sharon Sanders; brother Robert Sanders, also extended family and dear friends.
