Obituary for Jr. Herbert E. Zachow

Herbert Zachow was born in Detroit, MI on August 22, 1921, the eldest of three sons, of Herbert Sr. and Ethel Zachow. The family moved to Wixom when he was very young. He graduated from Walled Lake High School in 1939.

Herb married the love of his life, childhood sweetheart, Dorothy Holt, in 1942, just after being drafted into the US Army. He was able to come home to Wixom on leave before being sent abroad, just in time to start a family. Daughter Sandra was born in 1944 after Herb had been sent to England.

Herb was sent off to war and became one of the heroes who stormed the beaches at Normandy. He was in the second wave assaulting Omaha Beach surrounded by the horror of death and destruction. He remained in the European theater through the end of the war as part of a supply company having great adventures that he loved to recount. He picked up tidbits of the German and French languages, which he continued to use entertainingly.

Home from the war in 1945 the family grew. James was born in 1947 and they began building their home in Milford. Cathy came along in 1950, Douglas in 1951 and Richard in 1954. The Milford house was built by Herb and his father. Son Doug lives in the house with his family today.

After the war Herb took up a career in electronics and TV repair with DR Electric in Howell and then Montgomery Wards. In 1952 Herb went to work for the Milford General Motors Proving Grounds as an instrumentation technician until retiring in 1980.

When Jim turned age 11 Herb began leading a Boy Scout troop, eventually becoming council chairman for the Clinton Valley Council. He earned the Silver Beaver Award and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. Herb led scouts not only while all his boys participated but for years thereafter.

The family made many trips together as they all loved camping - two trips to the west and many trips throughout Michigan and Canada. We can hear it now . . . Are we there yet? Though they admit to a lot of bickering they all now look back on the experiences with great affection.

After retirement, Herb and Dorothy wintered in Florida at the Country Air Village in Zephyrhills where they had many close friends. Dorothy passed away in 1988. Herb married Agnes Grissom in 1990. Agnes passed away in 1992. Herb then married Beverly Shurtleff in 1993, who now resides in New York with her children.

Herb continued to live in Florida until he moved to the Great Lakes Christian Home in Holt, MI in December of 2006. Being a friendly and outgoing fellow he made great friends there as well as everywhere he went.

Herb was a friend to all and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Monday, January 26, at 11AM. Friends may visit Sunday 3-8PM. Memorials may be made in his name to the Clinton Valley Council of Boy Scouts of America, 1100 County Center Drive West, Waterford, MI 48328-1903. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
