Robert E. Craigie, Jr. a long time resident of Lake Sherwood in Commerce Township, died on July 2, 2013.
Born in Highland Park, Michigan on January 2, 1929, the son of Robert E. Craigie, Sr. and Alice Whitenight. Bob grew up in Detroit where he was a graduate of Redford High School, class of 1947. After graduation, he studied chemical engineering at Wayne State University and went to work with his father's paint manufacturing business, Craigie Paint Company, founded in 1919. On December 13, 1952 he married the love of his life, Dorothy Joan Smith, in the Bushnell Congregational Church in Detroit. In 1958 they moved to their home on Lake Sherwood; the fourteenth house built on the lake.
Bob worked for the family business for over 60 years. As a chemist, he took great pride in his company and its products. He was a member of the National Paint & Coatings Association, a Board Member for the Detroit Boys & Girls Club and a devoted member, with perfect attendance, of the Detroit Rotary Club with whom he enjoyed many friendships. He proudly served in the Michigan National Guard for nine years.
He enjoyed travel with Dorothy and his family. Memorable trips were Russia in 1975 and a trip to Scotland in 1977, to research his ancestry. Bob loved fly fishing and tied his own flies. A cabin in Grayling was a favorite escape. He was a member of the Otsego Ski Club for twenty-five years.
In addition to Dorothy, his beloved wife of over sixty years, he is survived by his daughter, Leslie Craigie (John Henke); his son, Robert E. Craigie III (Stephanie Comer); grandchildren, Siena Bee and Luca Sea Craigie; sister, Betsy Meadows, and her children, James, Jeffrey, John Meadows and Janet Allweiss. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Baker Craigie and leaves his niece, Pamela Doute, and nephew, Stephen Craigie, and many dear friends who join his family in mourning his passing. He will be missed.
A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Tuesday, July 9, at 10:30AM. Burial will follow at Acacia Park Cemetery in Beverly Hills. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, July 8, 3-9PM.
