Judith Ann Lavelle, a resident of Commerce and formerly of Ferndale and Royal Oak, died peacefully in the arms of her family Sunday, December 7, 2008 after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was 57 years old.
Born January 8, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois, to John & Ann (nee Schutz) Oxley, Judy was the oldest of four children and reveled in her role as the big sister, responsible for her younger brother and sisters. That same sensible and serious approach to her responsibilities would earn her much respect and admiration in her career. She greatly enjoyed her work as Senior Account Manager for ten years at Akebono Brakes, an automotive supplier in Farmington Hills.
Although she would later earn her Bachelors Degree in Business Management from Walsh College, it was at Michigan State University that Judy met the love of her life, John Lavelle. They married on April 30, 1977 and were blessed with two wonderful sons to fill their lives with laughter and love. In 2000, John and Judy moved to a home in Commerce Township and soon took to creating their own paradise in the back yard. Their weekends were filled with trips to nurseries and Judys eye for design and attention to detail would keep John busy planting, and sometimes replanting, their finds throughout the growing season. Their gardens, koi pond and stream were also planned for enjoyment from inside the house and Judy had said that the gardens bloomed and grew especially beautiful this year.
Judy was a warm and generous woman who extended her caring ways to all those around her. She adopted many pets through the years including several feral cats and Diesel, her lovable Golden Retriever. Judy was a good cook and enjoyed researching new recipes and poring through cookbooks. She was an avid reader, passing many peaceful hours lost in her books surrounded by her extensive pottery collection that stretched into every room in the house. Judys wonderful sense of humor and positive attitude were always evident, even when faced with cancer, and will remain ever-present in the memories of those who knew her.
Preceded in death by her mother, Ann Oxley (d. 1997), Judy is survived by her beloved husband of 31 years, John; sons, Michael John, Christopher Joseph; father, John Jack Oxley; siblings, Jeff Oxley of Portland, OR, Marti Schak of Crystal Lake, IL, Claudia Oxley of Minneapolis, MN and many loving extended family members and dear friends who come together to mourn her death and celebrate the treasured years they had with her.
