Obituary for Karen Ann Ellison

Karen Ann Ellison, a resident of Commerce Township, died on July 28, 2017 after being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. She was 69 years old.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on February 8, 1948, the youngest child of Vogal Bruce Honsinger and Anna Tippett Honsinger, Karen grew up in Milford where she was a graduate of Milford High School. She earned her associates degree at Oakland Community College and her bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in elder care from Eastern Michigan University. During her time at Oakland Community College she realized the need for daycare for young parents attended classes and helped to start the college’s first daycare. A plaque at the school marks her efforts in founding the first scheduled daycare there.

Karen met Norman Dean Ellison III on a blind date. They fell in love and married on June 25, 1966 in the Milford Presbyterian Church. They made their home in Milford, where they were blessed with the births of a son and daughter, and in recent years have lived in Commerce Township.

Karen’s family was her life. She doted on her children, grandchildren and great grand daughter and included them in all of her favorite activities, especially in the love of garage sales. She was also the first female Little League baseball coach in Milford, and captained her team to a championship.

In addition to Norm, her beloved husband of over fifty-one years, she is survived by her daughter, Tammy (Mike) McKinnon; grandchildren, Aaron, Jessica, and Luke Nelson, Austin, Allyson, Miranda and Ian Ellison; great granddaughter, Juniper; sisters, Pat Mann and Doris Colegrove and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her son, Norman Dean Ellison IV; her parents, Bruce and Ann Honsinger and sisters, Lois Shields and Delores Gordon.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Thursday, August 3, at 11AM. Burial will follow in Milford Memorial Cemetery. Friends may visit on Wednesday, August 2, from 4-8PM.
