Obituary for Kip George Schultz

Donald “Kip” George Schultz was born on June 19, 1952 in Detroit. He is the son of Donald and Doris Schultz and older brother to Dean and Dave. As a teenager, Kip and his family moved from Inkster to Farmington. He graduated from Farmington High School in 1970. He studied psychology at Eastern Michigan University for two years before joining his father in pipe fitting at Robert Carter. For 10 years, Kip took night classes at Lawrence Technical University and studied mechanical engineering.

Kip was an avid sports fan and athlete. Growing up, he loved to fish, ski and go snowmobiling with his father and brothers in Mancelona. At Farmington High School, he played baseball and was the captain of the Varsity football team. In his twenties, Kip played softball and hockey with his father. He played on a Class A Metro Bank team at Shiawassee Park. Kip was such an accomplished hockey player that he tried out for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team and made it to the final 40 players. He continued to play hockey until his mid 50’s.

In 1980, while at Mr. Joe’s, a bar in Southfield, Kip spotted a beautiful woman named Kathy. Kip was there with his friend, who happened to be Kathy’s cousin, Kevin McElroy. Kip and Kathy dated for 1.5 years. They married in 1982 at Our Lady of Mercy. Their first born, Ryan, arrived later that year and then Rachele in 1984.

Kip worked for Robert Carter for 20 years. He then joined Limbach and completed his career with John E. Green. Over the years his career advanced from pipefitting to mechanical engineering and estimating for large heating and cooling projects.
Kip took much joy in creating excel spreadsheets to organize the bills and also educating his children on math and economics. He worked tirelessly with everything he did. Golf was Kip’s passion. He played in leagues and lead the one in his neighborhood association. His goal was to golf at least one time every winter month and you would often find him on his neighborhood course after work, rain or shine. He loved to be with his family at the family cottages in Mancelona and later in Oscoda.

Kip was loved by many. He was known as “Grampy” by his three grandchildren, Grayson, Olivia and Audrey. He adored them and spent many hours trying to teach them his favorite game of golf, how to drive a golf cart and ice skate. He’ll forever be remembered as a hard-working, technical and loving man who will be missed by so many.
