Obituary for Laurence "Larry" Clark

Laurence Baker Clark Jr. passed away on December 2, 2018, at the age of 90 years.

Born on January 27, 1928 to Laurence Clark Sr. and Gladys, Larry grew up in Brighton, MI and at an early age displayed an impressive talent in music, specializing in piano and coronet. In addition to playing football and basketball, he participated in marching band and frequently performed duets at church with his father who would accompany him on piano. After agreeing to finish his junior year of high school, his parents gave their permission for him to enlist in the Navy (at the age of 17) and serve his country during World War II. When the war ended he returned to finish high school, attend Eastern Michigan University and eventually, on July 15 1950, married his beloved wife, Jean Elizabeth Denton.

Larry spent the majority of his professional career working in the sand and gravel industry however, in the late 1960’s, he took time to earn a teaching certificate in Music from Wayne State University. He put both his degree and God-given skill to use in service to his Lord as a choir director for over 40 years. Larry served as director of both Junior and Senior Choirs at Salem Lutheran (Detroit), Brass Choir at Our Savior Lutheran (Highland) and both Brass and Senior Choirs at Christ Lutheran Church in Milford. At the age of 82, he gave his final trumpet solo and retired.

He had numerous talents and interests including art, history, politics, antiques, clock making and a long-term leadership role in the “Cottage Bible Study” at Our Savior Lutheran Church. He was a devoted, loving father and husband who cared deeply for his family and their spiritual faith and, of all the blessings he bestowed on them, the greatest was an abiding love for Christ.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jean; son Ronald (Elizabeth); daughters Karen and Sharon (Bob); and six grandchildren, Matthew (Michele), Brian, Timothy, Patrick (Sarrah), Laurence IV (Nessa) and Caleigh. Larry is predeceased by his son Laurence B. Clark III.
