Obituary for Lena Rose Dowbenko

Lena Rose Dowbenko, a longtime resident of West Bloomfield, MI, who was raised in SarahAnn, WV, passed away in the loving care of her family on November 7, 2018. She was 92 years old.

Lena Rose Dowbenko (Mazurcovitz), was born in Lobata, WV to Steve and Bernice Mazurkiewicz on August 8th, 1926 in the coal-mining region of West Virginia. The family, including siblings Martha and Lawrence, later settled in Sarah Ann, West Virginia. The family often referred to the town as Crystal Block as this was the name of the local coal company. Lena graduated from Logan (WV) high school in 1944.

Lena then moved to Detroit, lived with her sister Martha, and started her job as a tabulator (punch card) operator at Packard Motor Car Company. She started her job there on D-Day, June 6 1944.

Lena met her future husband Ed at her cousin Martha Blaszkiewicz’s (Mostek) wedding where Ed was Bill Blaszkiewicz’s friend. This was the beginning of their life together. Lena and Ed were married on June 18, 1949 at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church in Hamtramck, MI.
Lena and Ed then moved to Southfield, Mi. where they started their family. In 1954, Jeffrey Edward was born. In 1958, James Lawrence was born.

In the 1960’s, they moved to West Bloomfield where Ed and Lena became involved with the development of the Shenandoah Golf and Country Club. This led to Lena learning how to play golf (and enjoying it) for many years to come. Even winning the third flight club championship one year. Payne Stewart was Lena’s favorite professional golfer. Something about the knickers he wore she really liked.

Lena and Ed were longtime parish members of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church for 40+ years. Lena would help out with funeral luncheons at the Church with her friend Eleanor Presto and others.

Lena enjoyed having company over and making fabulous dinners and desserts! Family gatherings for the holidays were celebrated with wonderful Polish food as well as her famous spaghetti and meatballs! Lena also helped take care of her mother Bernice in her later years who would be over for extended stays. Also, there was always room for a guest’s overnight stay.

In August of 2007, Ed, the love of Lena’s life passed away. Just over a year later on Christmas Day, Lena suffered a spinal stroke. Lena treasured family gatherings and celebrations and we continued this Dowbenko tradition. Despite the many obstacles, Lena would always smile and never complain about her condition. We enjoyed our family Sundays together, assembling many puzzles and eating sweets!

Lena was preceded in death by Edward, her beloved husband of 58 years, her sister, Martha (Stanley) Lisiecki and her brother, Lawrence Maze.

She is survived by her sons, Jeffrey (Judith) Dowbenko and James (Pat Houk) Dowbenko; granddaughter, Kathryn Dowbenko; grandson, Kyle Dowbenko; sister-in-law, Laila Maze as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Our Lady of Refuge Church, 3700 Commerce Rd., Orchard Lake on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 11 AM with gathering half an hour prior to begin at 10:30 AM. The Rev. Fr. Gerald McEnhill to officiate.
