Obituary for Leonard Benson

Leonard “Len” Benson, age 89, a recent resident of Novi and a former longtime resident of Grosse Pointe Woods and South Lyon, died peacefully on July 28, 2018 after a long battle with congestive heart failure.

He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty seven years, Elaine Benson; daughters, Lynn (Reese) Smith and Pam (Randy) Jacops; grandchildren, Isabella, Victor and Fletcher Smith, Riley, Renee, Rachel, Remy, Rex, Rory, Roxy and Ryce Jacops; sisters-in-law, Barbara Surbrook and Carol Pitt, as well as extended family members and friends.

Leonard (Len) Benson was born in Standish, Michigan on February 22, 1929. He was the only child of Alvin and Ruth Benson. Shortly after Len’s birth, his family moved to Arlington, Massachusetts where he lived until he graduated from Arlington High School. His childhood was filled with happiness and adventures, many of which included the family’s beloved Boston Terrier, Linda. During his childhood, Len was active in the Boy Scouts. He participated in numerous camping trips with the group and was able to achieve an Eagle Scout ranking before graduating from high school. After graduating from high school Len attended Michigan State University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in accounting. During his twenties, he worked for an accounting firm in Detroit. When Len was about thirty he met Elaine Surbrook at a church function at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church. The two hit it off right away and were married about 1 1/2 years later, on May 20, 1961. Shortly after their marriage Len, along with Elaine, decided to start their own accounting business and called it Pointe American Medical Management. They first ran their business out of their home, in Grosse Pointe Woods, but a few years later moved the business to an office in St. Clair Shores. They continued to operate their business for almost 35 years until they sold it and retired when Len was 69 years old. After retiring Len and Elaine moved to South Lyon. They resided there until January 2017 when they moved to Fox Run Retirement Community in Novi. Although much of Len´s adult life was consumed with work he always made time for his family. Len cherished the time he got to spend with his eleven grandchildren. His hobbies included the stock market and traveling. He especially liked vacations that involved visiting state or national parks or bodies of water. Some of his favorite vacation destinations included Switzerland, Australia, Hawaii, Vermont, Arizona, Florida, Massachusetts, and Holland, Michigan. Leonard’s biggest attribute was by far his devotion to his family.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Sunday, August 5, 2018 at 2 PM, with visitation beginning at 1 PM. Pastor Bryant Anderson officiating. Burial Milford Memorial Cemetery on Monday, August 6th.
