Obituary for M.D. Robert A. Songe

Robert A. Songe, M.D., of Milford, died at Oakwood Hospital on Thursday, December 4, 2008. He was 80 years old. Dr. Songe was the former Chief of Staff and Chief of Radiology at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn and a partner in Harris, Birkhill, Wang, Songe & Associates, a firm of specialists in radiology.
Born in Milwaukee, on December 17, 1927, he was the son of Trygve and Mae Lena (Abbot) Songe. Growing up, he earned his Eagle Scout and after brief service during W.W. II in the Army Medical Corp, he returned home to complete his education. After receiving his B.Sc. and M.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Songe interned at Detroit Receiving Hospital and did a residency at Harper Hospital in the mid-fifties. From 1958 until 1965 he served on the staff of St. Mary Hospital in Wausau, WI before returning to Detroit where he joined the staff of Oakwood Hospital where he was appointed Chief of Radiology in 1975 and made his home in Grosse Pointe Shores.
Since 1970 he served as Clinical Assistant Professor with Wayne State University�s School of Medicine. He was a consultant with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan and served on the editorial board of Detroit Medical News for many years.
A member of many regional, state and national medical societies, including the American Medical Association and the Radiological Society of North America, he served as President of the Michigan Radiologic Society in 1980. In 2004 that organization honored Dr. Songe with its Gold Medal for his many contributions to the Society.
An avid skier and sailor � he sailed in the Mackinac Regatta for ten years in a row � he also loved to fish and hike, read and play tennis. Since 1989 he and his wife kept a second home in Harbor Springs where they went year round for the peace and beauty of the area. He was a member of the Detroit Athletic Club since 1972. He mentored young doctors, was generous with friends who will remember him as a witty and sophisticated man whose focus remained on the practice of medicine and his beloved family.
Robert was the beloved husband of Janice for thirty-three years. he also leaves his daughters and sons: Mary (Paul) Gunn, Michael (Sandra) Fisher, Debra (Robert) Hullum, Fay Songe, Lisa (Gene) Keyes, Jan Songe, and William Songe; eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; a sister, Nan Sander; special friend and brother-in-law, Rich and Sherry Hernandez and a wide circle of extended family and dear friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty in Milford on Monday, December 8, at 1PM. Rev. John Harris will officiate. Friends may gather an hour before the service. Memorials may be made to the Oakwood Foundation. For further information please call 248-684-6645.
